Mata Ortiz pottery (previously known as Casas Grandes pottery) is named after the small village in Chihuahua, Mexico. Considered one of the most innovative ceramic movements of the 20th century, Mata Ortiz Pottery is a revival of ancient American Indian pottery traditions dating roughly back to the mid-13th century. The modern movement began in the 1970’s but its story, its styles and artists are ever evolving. Hundreds of artists dedicate their lives to hand making this pottery. Clays and paints are made out of the rich soils and minerals found in the region. Pots are hand built using traditional coil pottery techniques (no pottery wheels here), then hand burnished and meticulously painted with mineral based paints that chemically react in the firing process. Traditionally pots are fired in pit fires using a wide variety of burning materials from cottonwood bark to pasture fed cow dung, although kilns are used more and more today. It is this blend of ancient and contemporary styles that makes this movement interesting and addictive.
